Dr Aifric Martin is an internationally trained ophthalmologist with broad experience in the medical and surgical management of general eye conditions, as well as specialist expertise in anterior segment surgery, including cataract and complex corneal procedures. She provides comprehensive care for conditions such as cataract, corneal disease and other common ophthalmic disorders, with particular expertise in complex cataract surgery, iridodialysis repair and keratoplasty. She has performed over 1,000 anterior segment procedures.
Dr Martin graduated with Honours in Medicine from University College Dublin and was awarded a Doctorate for research into innovations in cataract surgery. She completed her initial ophthalmology training at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin, followed by specialist training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, where she also undertook dual fellowship training in cataract and corneal surgery.
Dr Martin has a strong academic and research background, with numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading ophthalmology journals focusing on advances in cataract and laser-assisted surgery. Her doctoral research examined the introduction of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in Australia, coinciding with the installation of Australia’s first femtosecond laser system at the Vision Eye Institute, Chatswood.
She is actively involved in education and training, having supervised junior doctors and contributed to curriculum development, including co-authoring the Victorian state cataract examination for ophthalmology registrars.
Dr Martin has worked across a wide range of healthcare systems internationally and received a scholarship in 2018 to provide eye care to Indigenous and remote communities through the Lions Outback Vision Van. She takes a patient-centred approach and values close collaboration with optometrists and general practitioners as a key part of delivering high-quality, coordinated eye care.
